Edward Rath, Assistant Professor and Associate Director Emeritus, was Visiting Assistant Director from 1988-1990 and Associate Director of the University of Illinois School of Music from 1990-2012. He received his BM with Distinction in Performance from Lawrence University (student of Theodore Rehl) and both the MM and DM in Piano Performance and Literature with High Distinction from Indiana University (student of György Sebök). In addition to teaching some piano, a graduate piano literature seminar, and coaching piano ensemble at Illinois, Rath has served on the faculties of Lawrence University, University of Wisconsin-Parkside, and Northwestern State University of Louisiana, and was also on the opera coaching staff at the University of Iowa. He was also an investment executive with Dain Bosworth, Inc.

A Steinway Artist, Dr. Rath’s performance career includes solo recitals and guest appearances with orchestras, and he has been a chamber music partner with cellists Laszlo Varga and Leonard Rose, among others.

For 22 years, Dr. Rath was administrative director of the Classical Music Festival, which continues in the Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt, Austria. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Liszt Society and both Editor of the Society’s Newsletter and Webmaster of its web site.

In retirement, he pursues interests in music, reading, cooking, gardening, golfing, travel, and keeping up with his two grandsons!
