Robert Rumbelow
Director of Bands and Brownfield Professor of MusicBM in performance, MM in conducting, and MME at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. DMA in conducting at the Eastman School of Music.
As director of the UI Band Program, Dr. Rumbelow manages the band faculty and staff, conducts the University of Illinois Wind Symphony, and oversees all aspects of this comprehensive band program.
Before joining the UI School of Music, Dr. Rumbelow was Conductor and Director of Wind Ensemble Activities at Columbus State University (CSU) Schwob School of Music in Columbus, Georgia. Under his direction, the CSU Wind Ensemble partnered with world-renowned musicians, recorded internationally respected CDs for the Summit and Naxos labels, and performed world premieres of many compositions. His annual conductorsí workshops have gathered international students and featured world-class faculty. Before his appointment at CSU, Dr. Rumbelow was Associate Conductor of the Eastman Wind Ensemble and Eastman Wind Orchestra.
Throughout the United States and abroad, Dr. Rumbelow is recognized as an exceptional guest conductor, clinician, arranger, composer, and lecturer. He has earned international acclaim for his compositions, orchestral performances, and wind band performances, some of which have been broadcast on major networks such as NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS, NPR, NHK Japan, and the BBC. His commissions and consortia have resulted in new compositions by Christopher Theofanidis, Shafer Mahoney, Alfred Cohen, JM David, and Dorothy Chang, among others. Kjos, Ludwig/Masters, Warner Brothers, and Alfred Music publish his compositions, which are performed internationally. He has received many noteworthy commissions and has authored articles and chapters in various music publications.
Dr. Rumbelow is a recipient of notable accolades, including national and international conducting prizes, American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) Awards, and National Band Association Awards. He has earned praise from critics for his recordings and live performances at statewide and national conferences. Taking their responsibilities to students, colleagues, alumni, and friends of the University of Illinois Bands seriously, Dr. Rumbelow and his exceptional team of professionals work diligently to provide the finest educational experience for all students in the band program. In addition, they work to establish national standards for the profession.
